sebbene Dylan abbia composto il brano, la sua prima pubblicazione fu quella del 1963 da parte di Ian & Sylvia.
La registrazione di Dylan apparve nei negozi solo nel 1971 all’interno del 33 giri “Bob Dylan’s greatest hits, volume 2”. Questa versione è una registrazione dal vivo risalente allo spettacolo alla Town Hall del 12 aprile 1963.
Una registrazione demo è datata dicembre 1962 e fa parte dei cosiddetti “Witmark demos”, una studio session pubblicata varie volte su bootleg nel corso degli anni.
Nell’album del 1965 “Odetta sings Dylan”, troviamo un’altra versione di questo brano, ovviamente da parte di Odetta (incisa l’anno precedente).
Altri artisti che registrarono il brano furono Harry Belafonte, Nick Drake, Rod Stewart, Dion, Chris Hillman, Joan Baez e The Kingston Trio.
Riguardo la registrazione di Elvis, lo stesso Bob Dylan affermò che si tratta della più bella cover mai eseguita ad un suo brano.
