Elvis canta queste quattro strofe direttamente sul set del film “Follow that dream”. Non esistono, quindi altre registrazioni. Tutte le emissioni sono tratte, di conseguenza, direttamente dalla pellicola del film.
NOTA: il termine old smokey si può letteralmente tradurre come vecchio fumante.
STORIA DELLA CANZONE: questo brano tradizionale venne registrato per la prima volta, probabilmente dal gruppo The Weavers il 21 febbraio del 1951 (Decca 27515) e raggiunse il secondo posto in calssifica vendendo oltre un milione di copie.
Nello stesso anno Vaughn Monroe raggiunse il 10° posto (RCA Victor 4114) e la Percy Faith Orchestra il 18° (Columbia 39328).
La parodia di John Glazer And The Do-Re-Mi Children’s Chorus del 1963 intitolata “On top of spaghetti” arrivò al 14° gradino (Kapp 526).
“On top of old smokey” è una canzone tradizionale delle colline del sud degli Stati Uniti ed è molto simile al brano “The little Mohee” registrato nel 1927 da Buell Kazee.
