nell’agosto 1982, nella sola zona di Tupelo, Mississippi, venne pubblicato il 45 giri “The impossible dream/An American trilogy” (RCA JH-13r2s_type_url) in occasione del sesto anniversario della scomparsa di Elvis. La performance di “The impossible dream” è quella del 16 febbraio 1972 a Las Vegas, Nevada, midnight show, edita su 33 giri nel 1978 in “He walks beside me”.
Nella sua prima versione datata 28 gennaio 1971, Las Vegas, Elvis la canta con il testo originale. La differenza sta solo nel secondo verso che invece di essere così:
“Oh, to right the unrightable wrong. To be better far than you are. To try when your arms are too weary. To reach the unreachable star”…
Elvis canta così:
“Oh, to right the unrightable wrong. To love pure and chaste from afar. To try when your arms are too weary. To reach the unreachable star”.
La parte sottolineata è l’unica diversa dal teso riportato in precedenza (Madison Square Garden, 10 giugno 1972) e significa “amare da lontano, con purezza e castità”.
Da segnalare, infine, che in parecchi spettacoli dell’inizio del 1971 Elvis chiudeva il concerto con questa canzone.
STORIA DELLA CANZONE: “The impossible dream” venne scritta da Joe Darion e da Mitch Leigh per il musical del 1965 “The man of La Mancha” col titolo “The quest”.
L’anno seguente Jack Jones raggiunse il primo posto della classifica Easy Listening con una sua versione di questa canzone.
Anche Roy Hamilton (1966), Roger Williams (1968) e gli Hesitations (1968) registrarono “The impossible dream”.
