“Writing for the King”
è la particolarissima pubblicazione FTD composta da un libro e due CD.
Come suggerisce il titolo stesso, questa volta la “parola” passa agli autori delle canzoni cantate da Elvis, in una raccolta di interviste, ben 142, in 400 pagine.
John Fogerty, Paul Mc.Cartney, Leider & Stoller, Pomus & Shuman, Phil Spector, Tommy Durden, Red West, Mark James, Tony Joe White, questi sono gli “ospiti” di “Writing For The King”.
La grande novità stavolta è quella che ci viene presentata dal doppio CD, sicuramente quello che abbiamo inserito per primo nel lettore: i demos interpretati dagli autori originali delle canzoni che Elvis ascoltava in studio per poi lavorarci sopra e creare così una propria versione, un nuovo arrangiamento del brano in questione.
È curioso notare come gli stessi autori, in buona parte dei casi, essendo a conoscenza che la loro canzone sarebbe stata sottoposta ad Elvis, tentano di cantare i demos in modo più Elvis-style possibile. In altri casi riscopriamo invece delle versioni sorprendentemente diverse da quelle a noi note: cito a caso “Burning Love” di Dennis Linde che sembra un’interpretazione dei mitici Creedence Clearwater Revival, oppure “Wearing that loved on look” di Dallas Frazier, lontana anni luce dalla grintosa e ruvida versione del nostro, un brano che in questo demo è soul allo stato puro.
Interessante anche la versione qui presente di “Raised on rock” di Mark James, che si caratterizza per un modo di cantare molto particolare in stile John Mayall o Johnny Winter.
Il primo dei due CD (che ascoltiamo per ultimo) raccoglie inedite performances a Las Vegas che spaziano dalla stagione di agosto ’69 sino a quella di febbraio ’72.
